MIR 3D RoomPack 3 features an important ingredient of sacred music: the special reverb of churches. It includes more than 4,200 impulse responses from the art nouveau Steinhofkirche in Vienna and the Late Gothic pilgrimage church Maria Strassengel in Styria.

For more than a century the Steinhofkirche with its incomparable acoustic properties has been a truly magical attraction for musicians and music enthusiasts. It is still used regularly for concerts today. Because of its acoustic peculiarities, this unique church with its long but clear 8 seconds reverb may be regarded simply as the “Viennese Taj Mahal”. In addition to the three main microphones that captured IRs (near the altar, in the middle of the nave under the cupola, near the main entrance next to the organ gallery), there are a number of so-called HotSpots – two positions in the left and right side aisles each, one position in the rear at the main entrance, and the entire balcony of the organ gallery. This means that Steinhofkriche can be used in Vienna MIR Pro 3D from each side of the main microphones, which allows you to put a real surround ensemble into place. Apart from that, the gilded pulpit left of the altar (marked by a red velvet parapet) is especially noteworthy. Here, too, instruments can be placed and freely rotated – the perfect place for a “preaching” soloist.

Acknowledgement

This RoomPack contains room responses with augmented directional resolution, improving their spatial mapping in direction and depth. Our first-order measurements were augmented to third-order Ambisonics by Franz Zotter, Matthias Frank and Elias Hoffbauer (University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics) in 2022.
