What’s in a Name

The Sage Gateshead, meanwhile renamed The Glasshouse, is a landmark building in the northeast of England that boasts outstanding acoustics. MIR 3D RoomPack 4 presents not only the larger Hall One and Hall Two, but also its smaller Northern Rock Foundation Hall with a total of over 14,000 impulse responses.

The Sage is an eye-popping curved glass construction, which explains why it’s now called The Glasshouse. Its three venues were constructed as isolated buildings in order to prevent transmission of noise and vibration. A special “spongy” concrete mix was used in the construction, with a higher-than-usual air capacity to improve the acoustics. Hall One is a spectacular wood-paneled auditorium boasting world-class acoustics and a seating capacity of up to 1,640. Designed to the highest international standards, it was intended as an acoustically perfect space, loosely modeled on the renowned Musikverein in Vienna.

This RoomPack contains room responses with augmented directional resolution, improving their spatial mapping in direction and depth. Our first-order measurements were augmented to third-order Ambisonics by Franz Zotter, Matthias Frank and Elias Hoffbauer (University of Music and Performing Arts in Graz, Institute of Electronic Music and Acoustics) in 2022.
